DUMPSTER GARDENING
All about Gardening with things that would normally find their way into this
That having been said leads nicely into Birds
TOMATOES
As can be seen I do not have alot of spare space in my vegetable patch. Sweet Peas for Flowers. Runner beans that produced until Mid December. The French Beans in the forground I exchanged for some spare Petunia plants from hanging baskets. The tops of a few Rasberry plants can be seen on the right. The Poppies among the Beetroot? Birds must have brought them in-but they look nice.
I always used to grow my own plants from seed but as we have many plants around the house lately, rescued from here and there, being protected from frost, I cannot find the space. Anyway they can usually be purchased from local market stalls for about 50p per plant. It was normal to suffer a glut from mid summer to the end of the season due to the fact that I would buy a half dozen plants at the same time. However ,lately instead of dispatching side shoots to the garbage container I have been letting them grow a little larger than I would normally on only 2 purchased plants. 2 or 3 of these side shoots are simply broken off cleanly, dipped in some rooting powder and slotted into a small hole made with a dibber or pencil, around the vegetable patch area fence.
This is done over a period of time until the area around the fence is full.
I have found over the years that it is beneficial to plant either French or
African Marigolds between the Tomato plants to stop infestation by White Fly
