DUMPSTER GARDENING
All about Gardening with things that would normally find their way into this
Although many of us have a seperate bin for recycled waste from our homes most of what we put into it apart from metal and plastics can be used in a composter. A few things to do and not to do with compost makers follow:-
Recycle Bins
You may or may not find the cost of Recycle Bins prohibitive if bought direct from the store or producer. However many councils buying in bulk manage to reduce the prices substantially to bring them within reach for many individuals who under different circumstances could not afford there purchase. Look on-line at your local council website, Library or council offices and if nothing is available ask why not and what remedial action they intend to take. Get your friends and neighbours to ask as well. The more complaints they get the sooner they may do something. Remember they are considering charging additional costs for overweight bins etc.
Your composter will not produce any immediate benefits ( apart from the fact that you have less in your bins) as these things take time, and you will for the time being have to purchase soil enhancer's from your local store. After a few months however it will become an on going process of waste in the top and compost out of the bottom. You will have the satisfaction of knowing you are doing your bit to save our planet and save yourself money.
It should be noted at this time that certain procedures must be followed in order for the chemical reactions for conversion to operate properly and give you the desired results and not a soggy , smelly, sticky mess complete with associated flies.
The things that go into your composter consist of two types-Natural Green Stuff and other Household Items. Near enough equal amounts of each should be put in at the same time to maintain a balance level.
