DUMPSTER GARDENING
All about Gardening with things that would normally find their way into this
It has recovered nicely and is one of the nicest flowers in the garden which flowers for most of the year apart from a few weeks between mid January and late February when it is normal to have cold winds and sometimes snow
At the time of planting I had not a large enough plant pot available but I had just had a tire on my car replaced so I removed the gravel from underneath where I placed the tire, dug the ground a little, sprinkled some rose food, set the tire back again and filled it with compost.
The top rim of the tire was painted white and contrasts nicely with the miniature Lavender growing at the bottom of the plant. All who see it recon that it must have cost a fortune but you know different. All it took was to be ruthless with it. Put it and its colleague into a bucket full of water for about 24 hours. Pruned it back to within 3 inches of ground level, put a little straw round it to protect from frost and the rest is history. It gets fed every now and again with Tomato fertilizer. To keep them flowering cut off the dead heads. Not just the old flower but down to within a 1/4 inch of a good leaf joint, with a slanting cut to run off water.
That having been said leads nicely into Tomatoes
It should be noted that if you fail to cut off the dead heads the plant will put its productivity into seed production and few if anymore flowers will be produced
This photo taken in early May 2007 shows the roses on the fence. They are really beautiful but are suffering from too much rain and cool weather
This is another corner of the fence showing an assortment of plants. Two roses,Raspberries and an old paint bucket filled with Nasturtiums which will fall down and cover it
For many years those of us who are fortunate enough to have a garden with a lawn area would cut the grass and dump the cuttings in a plastic bag ready for collection by the Council Dumpster Truck or Refuse Lorry-if at that time they would take it away-or a run in the car to the Dump or tip.
Nowadays however most councils will happily take it away and recycle it to be sold back to you as compost. Why on earth pay them, compost it yourself. Most councils sell discounted Compost Bins and if not you can make a small one for little cost which can be hidden behind a screen or bush somewhere in the Garden. Plants,Trees,Bushes,Bulbs and roots are all disposed of by many individuals who believe,in error, that these items have had their day, or by shops and stalls that believe that as they look so bad they are not saleable. We have a local store who leave these virtually unsaleable items on a shelf at the entry door. One day a few years ago I spied such an item,in a plastic bag, as is the case nowadays, with no leaves on the stalk but a small number of thorns. Along side was another in the same state. My accompanying family looked at me somewhat bemused and a question was posed rather cynically-"What use are they"?.
Well as you can see
Petunias from seed ready to plant out
Small Orange Trees from Pips
