DUMPSTER GARDENING
All about Gardening with things that would normally find their way into this
A bit off topic I hear you say!!!! NO, we live in an area which is surrounded by open fields so we are visited on a regular basis by a varied range of wild birds. During the spring, summer and autumn periods there is generally plenty for them to eat some of which they find in our patch in the form of grubs and caterpillars, which can be a nuisance if you prefer not to use chemicals.
We do therefore encourage them to visit during the winter by feeding them with "Waste" from the kitchen. Usually fat, rind and out of date bread together with a few nuts and left over seeds from our Cockatiel cage. So even during the winter there are few days that we have no birds in the garden. Mark, has recently completed a little bird nest box which he intends to place on the side of the garden shed shortly. It is nice to hear them singing in the sunshine and a pleasure to watch the smaller ones fliting around the Rabbits house picking up scraps
.
That having been said leads nicely into Bonfires
Birds
Yellow Hammer and a Blue Tit
Wagtail and a Goldfinch
Again the "waste" from the rabbits is used in the compost bin to be used to fertilise the vegetables at a later stage.
It is surprising what people dump in fields and Flower beds in the local parks. We have collected a variety of Strawberry plants and now have a Fresh supply from late spring to late Autumn. Many plants, like Marigolds still have seed heads on them which we collect and scatter around the garden. Busy Lizzies are easily proagated from cuttings placed in a cup full of water until they sprout roots. These can be kept over winter in a warmish place or grown on as a house plant. They come in various shades of Red to Pink
